Bhutan can be visited year-round, depending on your interests, as there’s always something happening. The climate varies at different altitudes, so each season has its own charm.
Spring (March – May):
Spring is the best time for nature lovers, birdwatchers, festival goers, and trekkers. The weather is clear with blue skies, and the snow on the mountains starts to melt, allowing flowers like rhododendrons, magnolias, orchids, and cherry blossoms to bloom. The Paro Tsechu festival in April is a major event, where locals gather for religious dances, blessings, and socializing.
Summer (June – August):
Early summer (June and July) is a good time to visit if you want to avoid crowds and enjoy warmer weather. However, heavy rain starts in August, so it’s best to avoid visiting then. Summer brings fresh vegetables, including wild mushrooms, which are a favorite in Bhutanese cuisine.
Autumn (September – November):
Autumn is great for photography and trekking, with cooler weather, sunny skies, and many festivals happening throughout the season.
Winter (December – February):
Winter is cold, with snow in the higher mountains, but the valleys remain warmer. Hotels are equipped with heaters and wood stoves. Punakha and Trongsa have their annual festivals during winter, making it a good time for a family holiday, including Christmas and New Year.
