Climate in Bhutan

Bhutan has four seasons.

Spring (March – May)

Summer (June – August)

Autumn (September – November) 

Winter (December – February)

Southern Bhutan has a hot, humid subtropical climate that is fairly unchanging throughout the year. Temperatures can vary between 15-30 degrees Celsius. In the Central parts of the country the climate cools a bit, changing to temperate and deciduous forests with warm summers and cool, dry winters. In the far Northern reaches of the kingdom the weather is cold during winter. Mountain peaks are perpetually covered in snow and lower parts are still cool in summer owing to the high altitude terrain.

Bhutan’s generally dry spring starts in early March and lasts until May. It is the season for beautiful flower blossoms and birds. Temperature will be from 17 – 22 degree Celsius. The temperature will be 28 – 30 degree Celsius in low altitudes such as in Punakha and Wangdiphodrang (1,300 meters). 

Summer weather commences in mid-June with occasional showers and continues to late August.  The rain is usually heavy, especially in the Southern part of Bhutan. Temperature can vary between 20 – 30 degree Celsius and cooler in the evenings.  

Autumn, from late September to November brings bright sunny days and some early snowfalls at higher elevations.Temperatures will be in between 20 – 25 degree Celsius, nights are cold. 

From late November until March, winter sets in with frost throughout much of the country and snowfall common above elevations of 3,000 meters.The Eastern Bhutan is warmer than Western Bhutan. The winters are dry with temperatures ranging from 16 degree celsius in the valleys with clear deep blue blue sky. Nights are much colder, sometimes below freezing point.
