Bhutan is a year-round destination for visitors depending on the interest. There is always something happening in the country. With the variation of climate at different altitudes, each season in Bhutan has its own beauty through change in nature and blooming of diverse flora and fauna.
Spring months are from March – May. It is the best time to visit Bhutan for nature lovers, birdwatchers, festivals and trekkers. The weather is clear with blue skies. Up on the mountain top the snow starts to melt which gives way for the small flowers to bloom. On the drive way one can see rhododendron, magnolia, orchid and cherry blossom.
Spring also brings joy to the Bhutanese living in western part of the country as the most popular Paro Tshechu (Religious festival) is held in the month of April. You will be able to witness the entire community coming together to celebrate the religious mask dance and to receive blessing and to socialize with friends and family.
Summer months start from June – August. You can still visit Bhutan during early summer in the months of June and July. This means you can avoid the crowds and chilly weather. The weather is warm and there are rainfalls in these months. We will advise you to avoid traveling in the month of August as the rain falls quite heavy. Summer season brings in varieties of green organic vegetables and also wild vegetables on the table. The Bhutanese favorite of the Bhutanese being wild mushrooms.
Autumn months are from September – November. The season is ideal for photography tours as there are many festivals happening in all three autumn months. It is also the perfect time to go out on trekking tours. The air is cooler with sunny and blue skies making it the perfect weather to visit Bhutan.
The winter months are from December – February. It is cold and we can expect to see snow in some higher mountains surrounding the valleys. However, the places of visit are more likely to stay warmer. The hotels are fitted with electric heaters and some hotels have metal wood stoves to keep warm in the night.
Punakha and Trongsa annual festivals also take place in winter as these two places are warmer compared to Paro, Thimphu, and Bumthang.
